Pataleshwar Caves , Pune






  • Situated on the Jangli Maharaj Road in Pune , Pataleshwar Cave Temple is enshrined by Lord Pataleshwar - the God of the Underworld, who is a form of Lord Shiva. Carved out of a single magnanimous rock, this spellbinding monolithic find is located right in the heart of the city and is a revered Hindu shrine which is thronged by hundreds of devotees and pilgrims on an everyday basis.
  • What is more, the temple has an exuberant architecture with elaborate carvings on the walls and miniature paintings. Other than Lord Shiva, the temple is also dedicated to Nandi and has idols of other Hindu gods and goddesses as well including Lord Ram, Sita, Lakshmi, Lakshman, Ganesh etc.
  • The construction of the temple was inspired by the majestic Elephanta Caves but it was left incomplete. For the same reason, the temple has no real entrance; the only major entrance is next to a banyan tree in the courtyard. The temple is maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

सरदार शितोळे वाडा ( कसबा पेठ, पुणे ) या ऐतिहासिक वास्तूचे मूळ मालका राजा राजेंद्र शितोळराजा या सिसोदिया राजघराण्यातील वंशज आहेत. हे घराणे सुमारे बाराशे वर्षापूर्वी उत्तरेकडून येऊन स्थानिक झालेत, अनेक शतके त्यांची देशमुखीचे अखंडित हक्क होते. पुणे परिसरातील पाषाण, लवळे, हडपसर, वानवडी, मांजरी, मोशी यासारख्या सुमारे साडेतीनशे गावांचे ते इनामदार होते. आज २१ व्या शतकात देखील त्या-त्या गावातून जमिनींचे मालक म्हणून शितोळे देशमुखांच्या नोंदी आळतात. पुण्याचा शनिवारवाड्या खालचं भूखंड , ही सरदार शितोळे देशमुखांची शेतजमीन होती. शनिवारवाडा बांधण्यासाठी पेशव्यांना हा भूखंड शितोळे सरकारांनी दिला होता, त्याच्या मोबदल्यात पेशव्यांकडून त्यांना बाणेर व जवळार्जुन येथील जामिनी देण्यात आल्या. पुढे सरदार शितोळे यांच्या जहागिरी मध्यप्रदेशातील होशंगाबाद, शहाजाबाद, खंडवा, सोनपत, पानिपत, नरवर , उज्जैन, गवाल्हेर इत्यादी जिल्ह्यात आणि महाराष्ट्रातील सातारा, पुणे, अहमदनगर, नाशिक या जिल्हयाबरोबरच खानदेशापर्यंत विस्तारल्या होत्या. या घराण्यातील व्यक्तीला या वास्तूत नरसिंहाचा दृष्टांत झाला होता. अर्थात नरस...
